DIY Has 6 Blood Banks, These Challenges That Must Be Faced

Pill, Gel Capsule, Medicine, Health

With a population of 3,720,912 people, the number of blood banks in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) has now reached six units.

The six units on average can collect around 12,500 blood bags per month and are used to meet the needs of 74 hospitals.

On the other hand, blood services in Indonesia, including Yogyakarta, have various obstacles. Some of the problems in question include uniform standardization, no networking or consolidation, limited human resources and equipment, and inefficient waste management.

All of that can be said to be the cause of the still wide gap in blood services between regions. This certainly requires the attention of all parties.

Darwin, Sp.B (K) Onk, Managing Director of Dr. Sardjito Hospital, in the Workshop on Blood Screening and Processing Centralization Through the Development of the ‘Center of Excellence’ at the Tentrem Hotel, Yogyakarta,

Dr.Sardjito General Hospital, located in the center of Jogja City, has become the main reference site as well as a trusted teaching hospital.

It was also stated that this hospital had a strategic role as a national model.

Dr.ardjito Hospital Blood Center itself has a role as a referral place (serology), runs Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) technology and acts as a center for hemovigilance so that it opens opportunities to improve blood transfusion standards.

According to Dr. Darwito, the consolidation of blood laboratories and services by building a Center of Excellence might be a solution for raising standards.

Possible development opportunities include areas of training and services for transfusion, blood center accreditation, GMP certification (CPOB), and the presence of a national hemovigilance center.

A number of things that are no less important in improving blood transfusion standards include collaboration between institutions, big data analysis, research efforts, and community empowerment.
